Molecular Medicine Department

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute through the Med into Grad Initiative

The University of Utah Translational Medicine Program (TMP) is sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and the University of Utah Department of Molecular Medicine. It is designed to fulfill a transformative educational mission by providing comprehensive medical science education to basic science trainees. This mission is mandated by the fact that granting agencies, industry, and current scientific methods require that PhD students align their training and research goals with an eye to discoveries that impact human health.

TMP provides a highly relevant curriculum and tailored mentoring for 6 students per year to complete a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) concurrently with their PhD. TMP core courses are open to all and teach human physiology, pathophysiology, and therapeutics to all interested PhD and post-doctoral trainees and faculty. TMP activities integrate seamlessly with existing graduate programs and expose students to human disease models, interdisciplinary teams, intellectual property, drug and device development, clinical applications, and regulatory issues that are fundamental to the transitional process. TMP rallies our basic science programs, clinical departments, and Schools of Law and Business around a common educational mission, and serves as a model of cooperation for other research, clinical and commercialization efforts.
