The HHMI Med into Grad Initiative provides grants to facilitate integration of clinical medicine into the graduate school curriculum. The University of Utah Translational Medicine Program began in 2010 following a grant application by investigators in the Molecular Medicine Department. These investigators recognized the school already had a successful program that taught medical students how to apply science to their work in the clinic. However, no such program existed to teach graduate science students about medicine. Many of these graduate students will work on disease-related research at some point in their careers. With the creation of the Molecular Medicine Med into Grad Program, the university is hoping to transform its teaching of graduate science students and better prepare them to make discoveries that can be translated into improvements in human health.

Our mission is to accelerate the pace at which life sciences and bioengineering discoveries translate into disease interventions, and in turn, impact human health. The MSCI degree as part of the TMP enhances translational medicine via four key missions: didactic education, clinical exposure, scientific research, and commercialization/economic development.
